Forest Bathing: An Outdoor Experience of Biophilic Design

Biophilic design addresses our human response to our natural surroundings and explains that we thrive in surroundings that nurture us. In this session, we will step away from the architectural application of biophilic design, and we will instead step slowly through nature.

About the event

"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks." John Muir

Biophilic design addresses our human response to our natural surroundings and explains that we thrive in surroundings that nurture us. In this session, we will step away from the architectural application of biophilic design, and we will instead step slowly through nature. Forest Bathing is an approach that asks us to imagine we are seeing the world for the first time.  We will spend this time slowly meandering through a natural area, immersed and aware of our senses and our surroundings. It is my greatest hope that you will leave this experiential session feeling peaceful and renewed.

5:30-5:45 Short introduction to Forest Bathing and biophilic principles

5:45-6:15 Forest Bathing

6:15-7:00 Gather at the beer garden for discussion (the beer garden will be open for beverage or food purchases)

**Note: Event will be held rain or shine - please dress for the weather**

Nicole Craanen, MFA, NCIDQ, WELL-AP, is an interiors designer. Nicole's unique background stems from world travel and a Master's of Fine Arts degree from UW-Madison in Human Ecology with a focus on environmental psychology and biophilic design - the study of the impact of nature on human health and well-being. Armed with this information and passion she has served as an adjunct lecturer at UW-Madison, in a consulting role to local and international organizations, and has spoken frequently on biophilic design. You can find her website at www.RootedInNature.org. It is her hope that she can continue to challenge our current building models, pursuing human well-being as one of the primary building concerns.
